Reaching the Reluctant Learner

Participants in this session will explore the reasons, causes, and issues surrounding student motivation with a specific focus on those strategies that help students who are reluctant to participate in a formal learning setting such as a classroom. Some of the key questions addressed during this session include: Key Questions: What is a reluctant learner? Who are my reluctant learners? What factors create or influence reluctance? Do any of our practices reinforce or create reluctant students? What strategies will work to reach/help/motivate the reluctant learner? Most importantly, participants in this session will be equipped with numerous specific practices and strategies that help to bring out the best in reluctant learners.

Poverty and Its Effects on Learning

Did you know that over 20% of American students live in poverty? Students experiencing poverty or near-poverty conditions face unique challenges (and so do the schools that serve them). While the statistics are alarming if you work with students living in poverty, there is good news. Teachers and schools all across the country are experiencing success. Have you ever wondered what they are doing differently? This session will provide you with the background, strategies, and tools you’ll need to be the next success story. As a result of participating in this workshop, you will be equipped with practical, results-oriented strategies that will help your students develop the skills to be successful in school and in life.
