Professional Development for the Youth Development Professional
Workshops and conferences are great, and there are lots of other types of professional development opportunities you can and should be using with your staff to strengthen their growth and increase your staff retention. This session will challenge you to think more broadly about what professional development can look like for your staff while giving them more ownership over their own growth.
Staff turnover in the OST field is a continuing concern that with annual pre-pandemic rates at ~ 40% reaching as high as 60% during the pandemic. Many programs have still not recovered. A principal component of high-quality staff retention is providing opportunities for growth. With the current revolving door of staff, this can be challenging for programs. To more effectively provide robust opportunities for growth, organizations need to make some systemic changes including:
1) Giving staff more agency over their own growth
2) Providing individualized growth plans for each staff
3) Preparing staff for their careers rather than just their jobs
This session will provide participants the opportunity to look at their current professional growth and asses what is working and what is not. Participants will then share best practices while the facilitator introduces others. The session is designed to challenge participants to move beyond traditional external trainings and conferences and incorporate more accessible, individualized growth opportunities including those done in-house. Participants will walk away with innovative ideas and a template for individualized staff development growth plans.
Participants will:
Expand their understanding and knowledge of professional development opportunities
Provide professional development immediately upon hiring new staff
Empower staff to exercise agency over their own growth
Customize learning and development to more effectively support each staff
Increase staff performance, satisfaction, and retention

Identifying Leadership Potential
With both students and staff, we are quick to determine who we believe has leadership potential and who does not. This is informed by our own biases and perceptions and has great impact on the growth opportunities for those we serve. This session will challenge your preconceived notions on what it really means to have leadership potential and how we can do a more effective job of identifying, strengthening and supporting our leaders, both in our programs and in those running them.
• Participants will reflect on their current perception of leadership potential and reframe their definition to better serve their staff and students.
• Participants will create more inclusive opportunities for leadership development for staff and students.
• Participants will incorporate multiple types of leadership development opportunities into their programs and teams.
