Summer Youth Counselor

Job description: Youth Services Counselor
Reports to: Director of Youth Programs
Position Classification: Non-Exempt
Classified: Temporary – May 2024– August 2024

Essential Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Youth Services, the Youth Counselor will provide direct
supervision, instruction, and follow-up for the organization’s youth services program
participants ages 14-21. Provide mentorship, counseling, and guidance to at risk and vulnerable
youth participants. Responsible for ensuring consistent positive, nurturing environments, and
fostering positive mentoring relationships. Provides career and educational planning that meets
youth participants career and educational needs and goals. Able to identify and meet the
unique needs of youth participants with disabilities and provide modifications and
accommodations when needed. Provides a safe and supportive environment for youth by
building relationships and maintaining structure and schedules. Promotes and supports the
potential of all youth participants. Ensures the safety and well-being of all youth participants
while in the care of any Youth Services activity.

Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties:

 Provide career and educational counseling and guidance to youth participants; caseload
of at least 30 youth.
 Monitor assigned youth while at worksites.
 Chaperone youth participants on field trips and campus tours.
 Provide feedback and resolutions to youth participants to overcome worksite problems,
social adjustment issues, disabilities, and other related concerns.
 Document participants progress on a regular basis.
 Maintain a mentoring relationship through support, counsel, reinforcement and
constructive examples.
 Review participant timesheets for accuracy.
 Engage with youth participants in ways that are developmentally appropriate and
promote mental, emotional and social growth.
 Assist in conducting group and individual orientation sessions that promote
developmental objectives.
 Develop relationships with community groups and organizations, school personnel and
linkage partners, making referrals when necessary.
 Interact effectively with parents, youth participants, and community partners,
respecting cultural diversity and maintain appropriate boundaries.
 Maintain consistent files for department records.
 Supervise youth participants with positive reinforcement to minimize conflict.
 Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and
choices within the program.
 Develop relationships with community groups and organizations, school personnel and
linkage partners, making referrals when necessary.
 Refer youth for needed resources.
 Perform other related duties as assigned.
 Report worksite progress and problems to the Director of Youth Services.
 Provide information to youth participants regarding job opportunities, educational
goals, and/or vocational training.

Supervision
This position assists in the oversight and monitoring of the organization’s youth
participants in its youth programs.

Skills & Abilities Required
 Knowledge of community resources.
 Detailed-oriented, and responsible;
 Ability to work with and oversee participants with varied cultures and backgrounds.
 Must be able to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
 Ability to work independently.
 Ability to identify youth with developmental needs for resource referral.
 Effective communication skills, both oral and written along with solid interpersonal
skills.
 Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
 Ability to lift 30 lbs.

Education & Experience
Minimum Requirements
 Associate Degree or higher in an Educational field preferred
 Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience required or equivalent leadership
experience.
 Minimum of one (1) year working in a classroom management environment, counselor
social work, or youth program.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and training skills, including public speaking.
 Advanced multitasking and organizational skills.
 Valid driver’s license and insurance, and good driving record.
 No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for sexual assault, child abuse or
domestic violence.

Physical demands of the position: the physical demands described here are representative of
those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this
job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to
perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is required to use their hands. The
employee is required to use their hands. Travel independently to other departments,
conference rooms, and on occasion to offsite locations to accomplish job responsibilities,
attend meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. Accomplish job duties using various types of
equipment/supplies furnished by the organization, e.g. pens, pencils, calculators, computer
keyboard, telephone, etc. This position will be required to utilize a personal owned vehicle to
drive to various worksites throughout the day.
Other Requirements
 Will be required to receive and maintain a fingerprint clearance card, and have a
satisfaction outcome to a criminal background check, and DPS Child Abuse Registry
check.
 Upon conditional job offer, candidate will provide at least four professional references.
